Cajun Community

Let me tell you a bit about fishing and hunting in our Cajun Community.

Sac-a-Lait Fishing on Lake LaFourche. This lake is a sleeper, as Crappie lakes go. Lake LaFourche is one of the best. A few days ago Dewey my fishing partner and me set out early Tuesday morning just about 5:45 am. Dewey is fussing about not being able to see his line which is 8lbs. test line yet. Then he shouts {Fish On} and then the fight is on. Dewey likes his Li'l Jewel Crappie pole. He says that I sould use a bigger line than 6lbs test line because of the big catfish in this lake. He finally lands his 1st fish of the day,a 1 7/8lbs Sac-a-lait (crappie) a speckle male beauty! I like my 10ft Crappie stick, 100% Graphite. I also like to use 3 poles at a time when we troll for Sac-a-Lait on certain parts of the lake, areas where we know Sac-a-lait hang out this time of year. I like to use the Little Crappie Niblits Which are fish attractants. They really work by the way and they are put out by Berkly - we use the solid white. We use 2 at a time. This is on a 3oz jig head. One of my neighbors makes a line of Jigs just for this Lake. I use a 17 Foot Allweld Boat to go after these sac-a-lait. Our Boat has a 50 Horse Yamaha outboard with 46lbs MotorGuide Trolling Motor. We finally had our limit at 10:45 am. That's 50 fish per man 100 per Boat. They weigh in at 3/4 lbs to 3lbs. That's a lot of fish! Now the work starts. We fileted them out and ended up with three 1 gallon bags of filets. Folks that's a lot of fish! See you on the next trip.

Estaban Brousard (Steven For short) is teaching me to catch shrimp and crawdads his way. Steven lives out of Morgan City Louisiana, where he grew up on a house boat on the Bayou. He was reared on fish, shrimp, and crawdads caught the OLD way. Steven uses a large cast net to catch shrimp when in season, which starts around June 1st each year. They shrimp very hard because of the season. Steven says I was a slow student when it came to learning to throw the cast net, which is very hard to do. It takes very special knack and a strong arm to throw it just right. This net is about 12 feet in diameter. We can catch for our own use only 25 lbs. per day. Steven and his Dad are commercial shrimpers, they use trawls on the big boat, and they catch hundreds of pounds per day. That is part of his family income each year. The next thing is to get set up for the Crawdad season. We bought 25 Crawdad traps and bait for them. We go down the bayou in the air boat and set the traps and we go back two days later and check them. I can catch 100lbs per day for my own use. When we catch at least 600lbs we have enough for a party (fais do do) at the cajun village out of Morgan City!

The Story of YoYo Fishing on Lake LaFourche. We on Lake LaFourche love to YoYo fish during cold months of the year. For those of you who are familar with YoYo Fishing this is how it works. You tie yoyo up string to stumps, docks, are any in or near the water. I like to bate with small shinners and let them down about 2 to 3 inches in the water. You use Sac-A-Lait (Crappie) Hook & Swivel. The size we use is 4 to 6 aute hooks. We go and check them every 1 to 2 hours. When YoYo fishing you catch all kinds of fish, such as Sac-a-Lait, White Perch, Crappie, one in the same, cat fish, Walleye some folks call these red eye or Gaule-eye, Gar, Baufflo, blue Gill Bream, Fish eel, Loggerhead Turtle, and soft shell turtle. Sometime if you don't, get back in time the turtles eat your fish, haha, thats bad. By the way we run them at night. In the early season look out for the mosquitoes! We set out 100 to 150 YoYo's at a time.We country Boys also have avery good time hunting Squirrel, Rabbit, Deer, Ducks, Quak Quak, that is a story for another day on Lake LaFourche here in The Swamp!!

Ha, it's Deer Season in Cajun Country Well its that time again, look out bambi these cajuns are out of venison. We have a very big deer herd here in La Fourche Swamp. One area I like to hunt is Marango Bayou area, where the Wildlife cross breed our white tail deer to those Wisconson Blue Deer. They are Very Big. They could Dress out as much as 245 lbs. Field dress. My buddy fired one shot and killed Two Deer! That was with a 308 Remington, great Gun! I ask him how he did that, he said he kept seeing this 4 point keep coming out in his food plot messing with some does already there, so he decided to take it. He said he put the cross hairs on it and touched it off. Then he looked back down there and there was two white bellies showing, Great scott! I have killed two deer with one shot!! NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE!!! So the 4 point turned into a Spike Buck instead of the Four Point. The spike field dressed 187 Lbs. and by the way that is a Big Deer, it's a cross breed. The other one was a Doe, which field dressed 245 lbs. Bill ask that we put the doe in our Freezer. He knows I try to put three deer a year in our freezer. So I will let you'all know when the next adventure takes place!!! Good Hunting!
